Time Zone

Basically, Australia uses three main time zones, they are:

  • Australian Western Standard Time (AWST): GMT +08:00 or WIB +01:00, used by Western Australia
  • Australian Central Standard Time (ACST): GMT +09:30 or WIB +02:30, South Australia and the Northern Territory
  • Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST): GMT +10:00 or WIB +03:00, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory

Daylight saving time is used in South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory.

Education System

University

Australian university academic year mostly commences in late February to early March. Most universities have two semesters with a four to six-week break between semesters plus the long summer holiday from December to February.

VET and TAFE Colleges

Vocational and Education Training (VET) and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) colleges specialize in courses that provide you with skills for a particular industry so you can work right away, or it can be also used to prepare you for further education.

The academic year for most VET and TAFE colleges is based on two semesters. The first usually begins in February and ends in June. The second semester starts from July to November.

Cost of Living

Cost of living in Australia varies according to the city where the students live and lifestyle of the students. As a general guide, an International student in Australia spends around A$1,500 to A$2,000 per month. That means you will need to prepare approximately A$18,000 to A$24,000 annually to cover your accommodation, food, clothing, transportation, telecommunication and other daily needs.

If you plan on bringing your spouse along, you will need an additional A$6,000 to A$10,000 per year to support him/her. If you intend to bring your children to Australia, you will need at least an additional A$4,000 per year for each child, excluding the cost of their education.

University students are permitted work part-time up to 20 hours a week during the term. However, you should not expect to cover your tuition fees or living expense from the money earned from the part-time job. On average, you can only earn about A$8 to A$15 per hour from it.

Accommodation

There is a wide range of options available for International students in Australia. Here are some of the options:

Homestay

Homestay means that you will live with an Australian family in their home. It is popular because you can get to practice English and learn about Australian culture directly. The costs vary, usually somewhere between A$180 to A$290 per week, meals are usually included.

Hostels and Guest Houses

This type of accommodation is a short stay option and the cost range is between A$90 to A$160 per week.

Campus Accommodation

Most colleges and universities offers dormitories. The cost varies depending on the size and location of it, mostly between A$150 to A$280 per week. If you are interested in this type of accommodation, please contact your university/college and apply early because it is very high in demand and there is a chance you might not get a room even if you are slightly late.

Rental Accommodation

Renting a house or apartment, either on your own or with friends is another popular choice for many International students. The price range is diverse, depending on the location, facilities, etc. Mostly ranged around A$250 – A$500 per week. Before looking for a place to rent, gather as many information as you can about the types of properties, costs and locations.
