About Brunei Darussalam

Brunei is a small sovereign state located on the north coast of Borneo Island in Southeast Asia. The country is completely surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak and separated into two parts.

About 97% of the population lives in the largest western part, while the rest live in the mountainous eastern part. About 33% of Brunei’s population live in the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan.

Brunei is divided into four districs:

  • Belait, with Kuala Belait as its capital city
  • Brunei-Muara, with Bandar Seri Begawan as its capital city
  • Temburong, with Pakan Bangar as its capital city. This district is physically separated from the rest of Brunei by Sarawak
  • Tutong, with Pekan Tutong as its capital city

The standard time zone used in Brunei is:

  • Brunei Darussalam Time (BNT): GMT +08:00 or WIB +01:00

Brunei does not currently observe daylight saving time.

Education System

There are four universities in Brunei Darussalam. The course duration ranges from two years for diploma programs to four years for undergraduate programs. The four universities are Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA), Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), and Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB).
